Cheapside, Preston Lancashire |
Cheapside is a street name you will often find repeated
around Britain. ‘Cheap’ comes from an
old English word ‘ceap’ which means ‘market’.
Our modern English word ‘cheap’ is derived from this - hence the idea
that you can purchase bargains or cheap produce at the market. The word
‘Side’ refers to the street that ran along the side of the market. Or, in other words, Cheapside means Market Street.
