King William III and Queen Mary were reigning (1689-1702)
while this part of St Paul's Cathedral was being constructed, and had their initials
carved around the east window.
Mary died in 1694 and William in 1702. They were succeeded by Queen Anne who reigned
until 1714. This meant she was still
Queen when the cathedral was finished which is why she gets a nice big statue
at the front, and they get a few window carvings up the back.
